One of the touchiest subjects a breeder may face is what age to “let the puppy go”. The major factor is proper socialization in ones own litter versus connecting with their new forever companions. One thing is agreed on by all however, and that is the importance of the first few weeks of this transition. We have designed our “Right Start Puppy Program” with that in mind. The most important attribute to this training will be your puppy becoming acclimated to the outside world. Socializing with other young pups, older pups, as well as adult dogs. Your pup will learn what is an acceptable and not acceptable behavior in a controlled environment, while interacting with other dogs. During this program the pups will also be introduced to children and visitors. Our girls play a role in our daily training and there is always guest coming around. Finally your pup will learn to cooperate with a handler as a team. Our training program is based on positive reinforcement (awarding good behaviors with desires). Developing positive connections with people as well as trust is crucial in happy, secure dogs.
The socialization part of the training, though important may not be observable. So what observable outcomes will this program have?
Recall- We will develop prompt, crisp recall of dog to hand.
Sit- Your dog will sit and stay. (We Do Not Teach Our Pointing Breeds To Sit Unless Requested)
Loose Lead/Leash Manners- No pulling and tugging, non-pointing dogs will sit upon handler stopping. Dog will develop the skill of focusing on the handler. (Basically heeling on lead)
Fetching- Will develop the fetch into a retrieve to hand.
Place/Steady to Place- One of the most important commands in controlling dogs. They will learn to stay put on place boards and cots. This is essential in stopping jumping on guest, begging, and over stimulated dogs.
Crate Training- We will work to develop the crate as a safe, secure place. No barking, clawing, and most likely no dirty cages by the time they leave us. They will also enter the kennel on verbal command.
Down, No, and puppy nipping will be work with as well. These pups will be very young, but very capable of achieving training goals. However it is important to understand this is the “Right Start” program. It will take a continuance drilling from the owners to make these commands permanent.
We at Lucky Ridge will always be willing to answer your questions, and help you navigate issues that arise as your puppy grows long after he/she has left our care!
